RotoShoot is an iOS application we developed to enable iPhone users the ability to quickly photograph and share multiple perspectives of large and small subjects in 360°.
From the beginning, we realized the name was of great importance, as it would not only become synonymous with the photography process, but also with the final interactive file it produced.
During our limited beta release, people around the world captured and shared RotoShoot’s of a wide variety of objects such as cars, jewelry and handbags, and we were surprised to discover a large number of users were making RotoShoots of cosplayers in their costumes and selling various other items online.
So we decided to build a modular pop-up ‘RotoBooth’ and launch the app at multiple cosplayer conventions in Vancouver, with the dual goal of capturing and sharing cosplayers in their favourite costume, while also showing potential users how easy it was to download the app and make their own RotoShoot’s.
An interesting collaboration arose from the initial launch when a local 3D printing service enabled us to offer on-demand full color 3D printed models of cosplayers who wished to transform their RotoShoot into a full color, physical model they could put on their shelf.
While the app and service is no longer available, RotoShoot was the world’s first mobile, end-to-end 360º shoot and share solution.
